I began practicing insurance defence litigation in my articling year and have never looked back. It is the challenge of identifying issues and finding an avenue to a reasonable and expeditious resolution that draws me to the work. Through the years, I’ve dealt primarily with bodily injury claims. I have a very proactive and practical approach to moving files forward, which has assisted in achieving good results in a timely manner. In my view, good communication—from the questioning process through to crafting an argument for court—is the most critical skill necessary for a litigator. My tenacious approach to files results in insurers frequently selecting me to take on claims that might otherwise get bogged down by slow, stubborn or inflexible counsel. At the end of the day, the key to effective handling of defence files is to never lose sight of the ultimate objective of resolving the claim, which is something that ought to be continuously considered at every stage of the litigation from file assignment to conclusion.
