Tony Slemko Q.C., Partner
Handling substantial and catastrophic loss claims requires more than simply being a good lawyer. Successfully resolving complex, high value files for my clients requires effective strategy, communication and team leadership skills too. The first—and key—role I take on when I receive a new file is to assess the claim and develop a game plan that everyone understands and supports. Once a file gets moving, I quarterback all the different experts, adjusters and investigation to make sure that the defence progresses according to plan. My practice includes acting on major flood and fire losses, large commercial claims, defending claims against educational institutions and defamation. I also have a substantial practice acting for insurers on subrogation claims. My experience and proactive approach helps ensure that the right evidence is preserved and the appropriate parties are put on notice. I always take a collegial approach to working with opposing counsel. I find that dialogue can often save valuable time and progress a file towards an appropriate resolution.
