As someone who always seeks out novel experiences, insurance defence is the ideal practice area for me. Working on insurance claims lets you advise on an incredible mix of files and interact with an even more diverse range of people who must come together to resolve a conflict. My degree in anthropology taught me the importance of putting my own experience and biases aside in order to look at things objectively and to appreciate the need to adapt my approach in order to successfully communicate with all parties. My academic background also helped me develop strong research and writing skills. Applying those skills to craft an effective defence and clearly articulate my client’s case is both intellectually challenging and rewarding. While pursuing my law degree, I had the opportunity to work at a national insurer and see how insurance claims work first-hand. That experience taught me about the claims process and helped me understand the approach adjusters take to settling claims, which is invaluable in my practice today.
